How to stay safe in London
London is a great place to live in as a student as there are many activities and places you can explore whilst studying here.
But big cities like London come with their cons which is their lack of safety in comparison to smaller towns.
Although London rarely feels dangerous it is best to take precautions in order to protect yourself and others.
In this blog we will give you with three tips on how to stay safe in London!
Don’t take out your electronics in public
London is well-known for common theft of electronic items especially mobile phones.
There are many incidents where people on bikes and motorcycles snatch phones from people.
When you are walking in public, put your phone away either in a pocket or your bag to prevent yourself from being targeted.
Whilst you are walking if you need to check directions on your phone, check your directions before you leave the house or the restaurant, or stand on the side of the street to check your phone before starting to walk again.
Buying phone straps to attach around your wrist will help you reduce the chances of your phone getting stolen!
If you are wearing headphones, either wear them properly or put them in your bag.
Don’t leave them around your neck whilst walking.
Buy a cross body bag
Hand bags and backpacks can be more fashionable or useful when carrying a lot of items.
But the risk with these is that with hand bags people can easy take them off your shoulders or your hands, and with back packs they could unzip and take things out from behind where you can’t see.
In order to avoid these risks, a cross body bag is a better alternative.
They attach your belongings more closely to your body and you also are able to see if someone attempts to steal something off you.
They also are a trending fashion item and can elevate your everyday outfit!
Don’t walk alone during late hours
If you are going home after a night out by yourself, unless it is a very short walk, don’t walk alone late at night and take public transport or an uber.
You may think about walking home to save money and think that it will be completely fine to do so, but it is better to be safe than sorry – especially if you are drunk.
Even when taking public transport, ask a friend to walk with you to the nearest tube station or bus stop, and message each other during the commute and when you make it home.
If you need to walk home, ask a friend to come with you, or at the bare minimum call someone for the entire journey to ensure that someone knows where you are and is aware if something happens to you.
But as a general rule, if you are going home late at night – uber is always the safest option!
With these tips, you will ensure that you are always safe wherever you are in London and you will be able to enjoy this city to the fullest!
Safety should always be your priority and is always the most important thing, no exception!
